What is Healthy?
You say you’re eating healthy, but what is healthy? Is it low fat? Low sugar? Vegetarian? Gluten free? Paleo? Vegan? We throw this word “healthy†around as if it has a universal definition.
Definition of Healthy
Dictionary.com defines the word healthy as:
“…conducive to good health; healthful.â€
What is Healthy?
This really depends on who you ask and in what context.
“Healthy†can be used to classify a diet, exercise routine, lifestyle, habits, relationships, or any other part of living which promotes happiness and wellness. When it comes to diet and exercise, there are plenty versions of “healthy†going around to complicate and confuse just about anyone. Where do you start?
“Healthy†is a Marketing Term
Healthy is the new trend, and companies are using “healthy†labels to sell you their processed products. Labels like “low fat†or “gluten free†don’t automatically make them healthy. For example, it might surprise you to learn that most gluten free products are actually LESS healthy than their glutenous counterparts! Most gluten free products are still processed and crazy enough, will likely be higher in sugar/carbs and calories. Another example would be sugar-free products, typically laden with non-nutritive sweeteners and chemicals that have little to no nutritional value, or fat-free products that make up for flavor with, drumroll…. SUGAR.
So How Do You Define Healthy?
What is healthy? Depending on your goals and how your body responds to energy sources, your definition of healthy may look a bit different than someone else’s. As a rule, however, your definition of healthy should always line up with the common goal of nutrient-density. The less nutrient-dense your food, the less healthy it is.
The Bottom Line for Challengers – FTDI
When you decide to not FTDI with your diet, don’t be surprised when your idea of “healthy†isn’t getting the results you anticipated. It’s not that your choices are necessarily unhealthy; they just may not be as nutrient-dense as the list we provided you with and therefore, less effective for reaching your challengegoals. Don’t get duped by clever marketing on packaged foods either. Save these kinds of things for your occasional cheats after the challenge.
